To My Friends the Chronic Pain Sufferers – A Poem

poem 1You’ll wake up to another battle field.

The rest of them are putting their pants on one leg at a time,

While you are dressing in armor and securing your helmet.

The monsters gather in their usual places while you are unsheathing your sword,

And just to get out of the door you will have to run a few beasts through.

You feel small but

Sister, you didn’t surrender today so you are my super hero.

Brother, you will not kneel before the ache in your back so you are a King.

Today you are feeling fragile but you are the warriors,

Leading others unknowingly, your strength fills a room to overflow.

I know, I hear the whispers too, that “oh she’s always sick”.

Some shake their heads with grand misunderstandings.

Perhaps that is the cruelest monster of all

But,

Sister, you are the thick backbone of conquerors

Brother, from that chair you are teaching what makes a man a man.

You wake up in the Ring every day, toe to toe with what others only fear.

You will take the blows standing on both feet, never against the ropes.

Your smile shakes the ground that creepers stand on.poem 3

A Shine glows in your eyes as another ugly thing falls at your feet.

You’ll climb and claw through your day, digging in your nails to stay upright.

You won’t break this time, though you will contemplate it more than once.

I know, you are gasping for air unsure if you can reach sunset.

You’ll be collapsing where others simply rest,

And fall asleep wrapped in silence and pills that don’t work.

But,

Beautiful Sister, I believe in impossible things because of you.

Strong Brother, your quiet war is not unnoticed in my aching heart.

Just one more bad night ‘s sleep and….

You’ll wake up to another battle field.

The rest of them are putting their pants on one leg at a time,

While you are dressing in armor and securing your helmet-

With Love, G.R.
